Our Story
Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge established by women who recognised the need for safety, advocacy, and support for those experiencing current or historic violence, our organisation has grown alongside the changing needs of our community while remaining grounded in our core purpose: supporting whānau to live free from violence. Our services continue to evolve, providing crisis intervention and safe accommodation to delivering a comprehensive range of specialist family violence services, 24-hour crisis response, safe house accommodation, advocacy, safety planning,
Whānau Protect alarms, tamariki and rangatahi programmes, wāhine programmes, behaviour change support for tāne, and ongoing wraparound support for whānau across the wider Ōtepoti region. Our mahi is underpinned by manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, Tino Rangatiratanga, and a belief in the strength and resilience of those we support. We recognise that family violence affects individuals, whānau, and communities, and that meaningful change requires not only crisis response but also prevention, education, healing, and long-term support.
Today, Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge continues to work alongside our community, partner agencies, volunteers, supporters, and funders to create safer futures for wāhine, tamariki, rangatahi, tāne, and whānau. While much has changed since our beginnings, our commitment remains the same: providing compassionate, professional, and culturally responsive support to those who need it most.
